A Message for Families:
What’s Happening,
Why It Matters, and
How You Can Take Action
Right now, programs that help your family — like access to doctors, therapies, food, and medical equipment — are being discussed and changed in ways that could directly affect you.
You may not see it on the news, but decisions are being made in Raleigh and Washington that could take away the very support that helps our children live, grow, and remain with families who love them.
Here’s what that could mean for families like yours:
Children may lose access to speech, physical, or behavioral therapies.
Families may no longer get help paying for life-saving medicines or medical equipment.
Caregivers — including grandparents, foster parents, and relatives — may no longer be able to afford to keep children at home.
Some children could be moved into institutions, not because it’s best, but because there’s no other choice left.
This isn’t politics — it’s personal.
At Foster Family Alliance of NC, we know this firsthand. We are those families. We’ve cared for children born at 22 weeks. We’ve celebrated kids learning to speak for the first time with devices covered by Medicaid. We’ve stood with grandparents, kinship caregivers, and foster families who gave everything they had — because help was there when it mattered most.
That help is now at risk.
You deserve to know what’s happening. You deserve clear answers. And you deserve a voice.
That’s why FFA-NC is working with organizations across the state to make sure your story is heard — not lost in political noise.
Here’s How You Can Take Action:
Find Your Legislators
Visit NC General Assembly’s “Who Represents Me?” tool and enter your home address.
Write down the names and contact information for your NC House and Senate members.
Make a Call
Calling takes just a few minutes and is one of the most effective ways to get attention.
You can say:
“My name is [first name], and I live in [city]. I am a [foster/adoptive/kinship] parent caring for [child/children]. I’m asking you to protect Medicaid and related supports, because without them, families like mine cannot keep children safe and at home.”Send a Short Email or Letter
Keep it personal and brief. Share how changes could affect your child. One or two sentences is enough.
Example: “Because of Medicaid, my child receives [therapy/medication/medical equipment]. If this goes away, I don’t know how I will keep my child healthy and at home.”

Behind every policy change is a child waiting to speak, to walk, to breathe without machines. A caregiver is wondering if they can keep saying yes. A grandparent is choosing between groceries and oxygen.
This is not about numbers — it’s about names, faces, and futures. It’s about whether a child gets to stay with the only family they’ve ever known, or is forced into an institution because the support they need suddenly disappeared.
Your child’s life is not a line item. And we will fight to make sure it’s never treated that way.
You are not alone — and you are not powerless.
